Trigonella foenum-graecum, widely known as fenugreek, is an annual plant in the family Fabaceae. The plant is native to North Africa and countries bordering the eastern Mediterranean. Its seeds and leaves are common culinary ingredients in dishes from the Indian subcontinent and have been used since ancient times. Fenugreek has appetite-stimulating properties and can be used to promote weight gain, especially in those suffering from anorexia. Amongst other medicinal properties, Fenugreek can balance blood sugar and blood cholesterol levels.
