Commiphora myrrha, also called African myrrh, herabol myrrh, Somali myrrhor, gum myrrh, and common myrrh, is a tree in the Burseraceae family. The tree is native to the Arabian peninsula and to Africa. The gum of the myrrh tree is used as medicine as well as its resin which is made from dried tree sap. Myrrh is anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, and has been used as an astringent, antiseptic, anti-parasitic, anti-tussive, emmenagogue, and anti-spasmodic agent. Myrrh is one of the oldest known medicines that was extensively used by ancient Egyptians. It is also used in perfumes and incense.
